Listening for Stories

Listening for stories often starts in my sketchbooks.  I draw small moments quickly, aiming for an immediacy that is well observed.  Some are abstract records of emotions from Zoom calls; some are buildings and environments from walks around my neighborhood in DC. Tree roots in the park are splendid sources for finding and exploring personalities, as are the paint smears on my palette. Returning later I ask the drawings, what do you need, what do you want? After a bit of sifting, these feelings, impressions and imaginings often show up in my finished illustrations.
